With the launch of the Ioniq EV subbrand and addition of new hybrid models to the Hyundai lineup, dealers are preparing for an orderly transition to a zero-emissions future with the help of the automaker.
“This is something that Hyundai and the dealers will be leaning into big time,” said Kevin Reilly, chairman of the Hyundai National Dealer Council and owner of Alexandria Hyundai in Virginia.
The Ioniq subbrand, with three models being rolled out by 2024, provides a road map for dealers and customers on battery-electric vehicles. Hyundai also is offering a greater variety of hybrid vehicles and launched the Santa Cruz small pickup to bolster its light-truck options.
That broad combination of gasoline-only, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell options gives the automaker a strong portfolio to meet customer needs.
“Hyundai is very good at figuring that out and adapting to the market,” Reilly said. “They’ve been very good at figuring out what the market wants, and then producing those vehicles.”
The first Ioniq model on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP electric platform, the Ioniq 5, is doing well at Hyundai dealers, with its stylish exterior and ample interior for a compact crossover.
“When I was at the Washington auto show, there was a separate section of the Hyundai display that was Ioniq 5,” Reilly said. “And every time I was there, people were all over it. People were absolutely enthralled with the car.”
Over the past year, Hyundai has launched hybrid versions of the Elantra compact sedan, Tucson compact crossover and Santa Fe midsize crossover.
The Tucson and Santa Fe also offer plug-in hybrid options.
“The more options we have to present to the customer, the better,” Reilly said. “And that will certainly vary by the market. Regardless of where the dealership is located, having more options to present to the customer is just better.”
For North America, Hyundai has pledged $7.4 billion in investments focused on electrification, which shows its commitment to the U.S. market, Reilly said. “From a dealer body perspective, we know Hyundai is leaning into this with a lot of investment and a lot of focus. So by extension, so are we as dealers.”
