Genesis just this year launched the gasoline version of the compact GV70 crossover in North America, and now it plans to bring a battery-electric version.

The Electrified GV70 was presented last week at China’s Guangzhou auto show to generate interest in the local market, but will also come to the U.S., the automaker said.

“It will be available only as an all-wheel-drive model, and details on output and performance for North American models will be available closer to launch,” Genesis said. “This powerful model is expected to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds with Boost Mode.”

The boost feature allows Genesis models to increase power for 10-second bursts. If the Electrified GV70 meets its acceleration target, it would be quicker than the gasoline GV70 with the optional six-cylinder engine.

Although the Electrified GV70 will not use Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP skateboard platform, it will use the new 800-volt battery system for ultra-fast charging.

“Range estimates for the North American market will be available closer to launch,” the automaker said. “The addition of 350-kilowatt rapid charging, meanwhile, enables the battery to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 20 minutes.”

The Electrified GV70 is the third fully electric vehicle that Genesis has announced. The others are the similarly sized GV60 — with a more retro-futuristic design — and the Electrified G80, which is an EV version of the gasoline-engine G80 midsize sedan.

The GV70, launched in the spring, is already Genesis’ No. 3 seller in the U.S. after the GV80 crossover and G70 sedan.

The GV60 and Electrified G80 are expected in the first half of 2022. The Electrified GV70 is likely in 2023, although Genesis would not confirm launch dates for the U.S.

Genesis also had no comment on whether there would be future EV versions of existing combustion-engine vehicles.

The automaker’s corporate siblings at Hyundai and Kia have announced plans for an electric midsize sedan and two three-row crossovers on the E-GMP platform in the next three years.

Genesis has said that it will become a fully electric brand by 2030. From 2025 on, it will launch only zero-emissions vehicles but will continue to sell existing combustion-engine models from 2025 to 2030.
